Obama said his Christian beliefs are the foundation of his administration’s efforts to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms of their choice in America’s schools.

During a PBS town hall event in Elkhart, Indiana, Arvis Dawson put Obama on the spot about his administration’s heavy-handed tactics on the issue.

“With all the pressing issues you have before you right now, why is the issue of which bathroom a person uses such an issue?” he asked.

awson later added, “I think too, wherever you were going to the bathroom before, continue to go to the bathroom there. I don’t have a problem with that.”

Obama defended his administration’s conduct. The U.S. Department of Education recently sent schools an order to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms of the gender with which they identify. The administration has also supported students suing schools that deviate from the administration’s policy.

“Somehow people think I made it an issue,” Obama said. “I didn’t make it an issue.”


ama said his administration merely sought to do the right thing.

“Look, I have profound respect for everybody’s religious beliefs on this, but if you’re in a public school the question is how do we just make sure that children are treated with kindness. That’s all,” Obama said.

“My reading of Scripture tells me that that Golden Rule is pretty high up there in terms of my Christian belief. … As president of the United States, those are the values that I think are important,” he said.
