Obama approved a Pentagon request to send more than 600 additional troops to Iraq helping local forces battle the Islamic State, the White House and military officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The 615 additional troops brings the total number of U.S. service members in Iraq over 5,000. The U.S. previously had roughly 4,600 troops in Iraq, according to the Pentagon, although the figure did not include some troops there on temporary duty. It marks the 11th troop increase in Iraq since June 2014.
The troops will be going primarily to two airbases in Iraq: al-Asad Airbase, northwest of Ramadi, and Qayyarah West Airfield, 25 miles south of Mosul, as the Iraqi military plans for possible anti-ISIS operations there.
