ALBANY - As the state legislature moves through its last scheduled week in Albany, parents came to the Capitol Tuesday morning trying to rollback Common Core.
The people who gathered Tuesday morning at the Legislative Office Building definitely have an opinion on the Common Core educational standards- they don't like them.
Three Long Island legislators joined the group of about 75 to lobby against the standards that have been adopted by education policymakers.
Legislators acknowledged the bills they're advocating stopping the Common Core initiatives are bottled up in committees and show no signs of moving.
The two assemblymen here are Republicans, so it would be extraordinary for a measure they're advocating with no obvious majority Democratic support to pass their chamber, much less get signed by the Democratic governor.
But hope springs eternal.
The federal governor tied Common Core changes to money allocations, getting the states to cooperate.
New York State did the same thing to push through local school district cooperation.
The state Board of Regents is very supportive of the Common Core changes, and in general, it appears the governor is as well, making Tuesday’s lobbying effort by opponents a long shot to accomplish the changes they're seeking.
