President Obama has been lauded by some for his personal description of the difficulties facing young American black men. This came Friday afternoon when he suddenly appeared in the White House briefing room to offer his thoughts on the George Zimmerman verdict, and try to explain to white America why black America is so dismayed.

He has been praised widely for his description of black angst upon hearing car doors lock while walking by, of noticing a (white) woman clutch her purse as he stepped onto an elevator, of being followed as he browsed in a department store. These personal experiences were related in personal detail to convey a sense of solidarity with America’s black community, but also as an explanation of black America’s dismay to white America. David Brooks of the New York Times called it the best speech of his presidency, a “symphony” of emotion, fact, personal experience.
At the heart of the president’s remarks was the assertion that black men are victimized by racially profiling whites. Obama, and his Attorney General Eric Holder, and his public relations alter ego Al Sharpton insist there is a basic unfairness in white America’s knee jerk fear of young black males. That injustice, he implied, requires white America to scrub fear of black men from its conscious thinking, and more importantly from its collective sub-conscious.

Virtually at the moment he was speaking, white tourists visiting Chicago were being robbed by black teens. In the same city black teens were being murdered by other black teens. Six were killed and over twenty wounded through the weekend.
