17.7% Teen Unemployment in America – Still Above Rate of 6 Years Ago

(CNSNews.com) – The November teen unemployment rate in America was 17.7%, more than three times the national unemployment rate of 5.8%, according to data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) today.

The 17.7% unemployment rate, seasonally adjusted, is for Americans age 16 to 19 years.
While that rate is down 0.9 percentage points from the October teen unemployment rate of 18.6%, it is still not near the closest lower rate of 15.9%, from back in April 2008, more than six-and-a-half years ago.

In the final months of the Bush Administration that 15.9% rate rose to 20.7%.
After Barack Obama became president in January 2009, the teen unemployment rate continued to climb from 20.7% to 26.7% in one year, and then stayed in the mid-  to low 20s range until May 2014, nearly 5.5 years later, when it hit 19.1%.

The last time the teen unemployment rate was at 19.0% was in May 2008.
