Obama Calls For Bipartisan Effort to Address the ‘Diaper Gap’ in Mother’s Day Post?



In honor of Mother’s Day, President Barack Obama published an article to Medium addressing what he referred to as the ”diaper gap” in his budget.
Obama explained in his Sunday post that many low-income households struggle to provide clean diapers for their children, a problem that threatens not only the health and safety of the child, but also the mental health of the mother.

 can’t imagine what it would have been like to be a parent that has to choose between diapers and other basic expenses,” he wrote. “Access to clean diapers isn’t just important for a child’s health and safety. Research has shown that mothers who are unable to afford diapers for their babies are more likely to suffer from maternal depression and mental health issues.”
He urged the private sector “to apply their expertise and innovative thinking toward creating a solution for families that cannot afford diapers.”
Obama noted that 740 nonprofit locations around the country have joined the “Community Diaper Program,” which supports “diaper banks” for poor families. American businesses donated more than three million diapers to diaper banks in March, and Obama added that as of today, more businesses have joined the effort to provide an additional one million.
The president emphasized that this is a bipartisan issue, thanking all of the organizations and businesses who have joined the effort to combat the problem.
“Whether a Republican or Democrat, in the private sector or in public service, we all have a role to play in keeping our families and communities strong,” he wrote. “So today, in addition to saying thank you to all the mothers out there — looking at you, Michelle! — I want to recognize all the companies, nonprofits,
